Posted on October 25, 2016

Introducing iDental; our fabulous stockist in Melbourne. iDental is a unique dental practice, where they combine Dental and Dermal science. The iDental team is made up of qualified and experienced Dentists, dental nurses and skin therapists. The clinic is run by Dr. Giulia D’Anna who believes it is important for you to have healthy teeth, a beautiful smile and radiant glowing skin – we just knew it was the perfect place for MUSQ.

Giulia believes that oral health is vital in overall health. She says that without a healthy and functioning mouth, our body’s immune system suffers. Having high number of pathogenic bacteria in the mouth triggers a whole host of immune responses. There are many known links between poor oral health and general health, such as heart disease, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The known signs and symptoms of poor oral health including bleeding gums, bad breathe, pain and infection. Loss of teeth can occur in advanced states of poor health, which has a cascade effect, since we can no longer eat the same foods due to poor chewing ability. Ultimately this can led to poor nutrition and poor overall general health. Maintaining good oral health also keeps our smile looking attractive, which is one of the first things that people notice about us.

We catch up with Giulia and talk all things dental and dermal because we know our beauties can never get enough information when it comes to living at their optimal health.

Q. How often should we really visit the dentist for a check-up?

A. Most of our clients visit us every 6 months to keep their smile in great condition. This helps us detect small problems before they become big ones, but also lets us get rid of any pesky stains that build up on the tooth surfaces. This will instantly brighten up any smile. Our practice is pretty special because it incorporates looking after skin. We usually assess the skin with our dermal scanner to keep on top of pigmentation and other skin concerns too.

Q. What foods/drinks should we stay away from for optimal teeth health?

A. Bubbles in drinks generally mean that there is acid. Too much acid can slowly dissolve enamel over time, which leads to a whole host of problems. So any type of soda, including mineral water, is best minimized to keep your teeth in good shape. Smoking is a big no no! Not only does it significantly increase your risk to all sorts of cancer, but it stains your teeth too. Another silent impact that smoking has is on your gums. I have seen too many times severe issues with gums arise in smokers. Not pretty!

Q. How should we really be brushing our teeth at home?

A. The best toothbrush to use is one with soft bristles and a small flat head. I often recommend child size toothbrushes for adults as the small size lets you get right in around the back teeth, and near the tongue. You should use a fluoride containing toothpaste, and aim the brush at 45 degrees to the gum line and use small circles. This should take about 2 minutes. Alternatively use an electric toothbrush, so all you need to do is aim and the brush does the circular movements for you. At the end, spit out excess paste, but don’t rinse. This will give you a fluoride treatment every single day, helping to protect your teeth from decay.

Q. Best trick for pearly whites?

A. The simple things are often the best. Brush twice a day – morning and night, and definitely floss daily. This will remove all sorts of build up around your teeth and gums and keep them in top condition. There is no need for mouthwashes or other products, unless prescribed by your dentist. I am also a big fan of tooth whitening that is delivered professionally. It really works amazingly well, and does fantastic things for only a little investment. What is not to love about that?

Q. Dermal fillers – Yes or no?

A. For me, yes, yes and yes! As we get older we lose volume in our face, and this starts to create folds and draping of the skin that was not there in youth. Having great skin health is important, but looking like you have great skin is equally important. My aim is to always respect the natural proportions of the face. My treatment of patients is really about re-establishing those proportions, making the face appear natural and refreshed. We live in age where we can choose the way we look as we get older. You can do something about it.

Q. Are Anti-wrinkle injections safe and who is it suitable for?

A. We are so lucky that in Australia, we have a safe system of checks and balances. The anti-wrinkle pharmaceuticals are regulated by TGA, so that they are both safe and effective. The trick is to find a doctor or dentist that knows the art of using anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers safely and to achieve great results. Anti-wrinkle treatment can be for the treatment for wrinkles, and also the prevention of them. So really the suitability of treatment is quite wide. I have achieved really nice results for my patients in other areas too, like reducing banding and tightening of the neck, and reducing jowls. Working with great skin care, and both dermal filler and anti-wrinkle treatments can achieve really fantastic results.

Q. What is the all the fuss about skin-needling?

A. Skin needling has received quite a bit of attention recently, partly because of Kim Kardashian’s instragram photo of her Vampire Facial. Skin needling is a treatment that can be modified to treat a wide variety of skin concerns. Combining skin needling with platelet rich plasma (PRP) is fantastic because it uses your own body’s regenerative power to improve your skin, build collagen, reduce scarring and improve a host of other skin concerns.

Q. Latest beauty trend you are obsessing about?

A. I love treating lips, and redefining their volume. So naturally I love the bold lip that all the bloggers are wearing at the moment. It works really well with most complexions and the new formulations of lip colour mean that the colour won’t easily budge too.

Fun Fact about Giulia: I take skin and dental health really seriously. I am currently studying Dermal Science through Australasian Academy of Cosmetic Dental Science (AACDS) and am hoping to have this completed by January 2017.

You can know a gal by her beauty bag …

Your handbag is never without: A floss and a small mirror – just in case I get something stuck between my teeth!

Go to MUSQ product and why: Morocco Bronzer – because it makes me literally glow. I love that I can contour with it, whilst it is good for my skin. The MUSQ blush brush is so luscious too.

Signature scent: I am not a huge scent person, but I love to smell it on other people. I do like the small of YSL Mon Paris, and the bottle is so pretty.

Beauty philosophy: Beauty is about being healthy and looking natural. I love products that are good for my skin, free from harsh ingredients and actually do what they say they are going to do. This is what attracted me to MUSQ.

Makeup bag essentials: Cleanser, Moisturiser, sunscreen and Morocco Bronzer (of course!), my eyebrow pencil and gel.
